Concrete cosmetics and concrete restoration

In 1996, the successful collaboration between two restorers reached a revolutionary turning point in the history of concrete restoration when they introduced the innovative concept of ‘concrete cosmetics’. The visionaries behind this method became global pioneers, implementing this bold approach for the first time at RWE Essen Stern from 1995 to 1996.
Their creative connection lead to the establishment of Strotmann & Partner in 1998. The company specialised in concrete cosmetics, a demanding form of restoration that is perfectly suited to architecture and construction with this building material.
The cutting-edge technology developed by Strotmann & Partner has transformed over 1,000 projects around the world in the last 25 years. Their expertise goes beyond simple concrete restoration and extends also to the preservation of historical and listed concrete buildings.

Not only does the company deliver first-class workmanship on site, it also provides detailed advice on the numerous options for concrete cosmetics, restoration and design. As experienced restorers, the team at Strotmann & Partner assesses the properties of concrete with an expert eye, is constantly engaged in research and participates actively in innovative academic projects.
Their aim is to continuously improve working techniques and methods and to optimise the materials to suit the specific needs of each individual property.

With this significant contribution to the field of concrete repair, Strotmann & Partner has earned a global reputation for innovation and excellence. Their commitment to preserving our concrete heritage and the continuous improvement of restoration practices pay testimony to their dedication to art and architecture.

Perfection of high-quality concrete surfaces by eliminating defects in exposed concrete surfaces of all types for outstanding aesthetics and prestigious architecture

Concrete Cosmetics

Concrete cosmetics Before
Concrete cosmetics After

Developed by Strotmann and Partners in the 1990s, Concrete Cosmetics encompasses all techniques for the visual enhancement of concrete structures and has been continuously developed ever since. Originally aimed at the artistic enhancement of exposed concrete surfaces, it was later extended to all existing types of concrete. Strotmann and Partners have extensive experience in the treatment of textured concrete (slab formwork, etc.), exposed aggregate concrete, coloured concrete (e.g. white concrete) and acidified, sandblasted or bush-hammered concrete surfaces.

The most common requests for concrete cosmetics include

  • Cleaning (removal of unwanted inscriptions such as highlighters and graffiti; contamination and soiling by bitumen, glue, paint splashes, rust stains, etc.)
  • Removal of concrete protrusions, cement paste, efflorescence (such as sinter), concrete warts to bulging caused by damaged or warped formwork panels.
  • Removal of gravel pockets, washouts, oversized and/or excessive voids
  • Reprofiling of cones, formwork and decorative joints, corners and edges of all types
  • Elimination of chipping, spalling and accidental losses of material (boreholes, core holes, slots)
  • Partial retouching of visually distracting areas (both small and large)
  • Application of transparent, light-coloured glazes to match the colour of concrete elements of different colours
  • Optimisation of irregular joint patterns (formwork joints that do not give a symmetrical overall appearance) by eliminating and also imitating formwork joints in the appropriate places.
  • Imitation of the desired concrete appearance on elements not made of concrete
  • Application of protective glazes (transparent or lightly pigmented)
  • Preventive measures such as graffiti protection or hydrophobization

Concrete restoration

While cosmetic damage to concrete is often caused by mechanical influences or unfavourable conditions during concreting, damage to existing buildings can have a variety of causes that weaken the building fabric over the years. In order to prevent further damage and to ensure the long-term success of a repair, the causes of the damage must be identified, localised and repaired. Our specialist training (studies in restoration) and many years of experience give us the skills to identify damage and its causes, and to deal with it professionally. We often work in conjunction with the conservation authorities.

Experience shows that the following measures are particularly often undertaken:

  • Determination of the damage (if desired with corresponding mapping) and determination of the causes of the damage
  • Investigation of various parameters such as (if required) substance strength (drilling resistance test), progress of carbonation, determination of the position of reinforcing bars and their concrete cover
  • Investigation of the composition of the building substance in order to be able to design suitable supplementary materials
  • Cleaning (removal of all types of dirt; removal of biogenic growth (e.g. algae growth or mosses), dirt deposits caused by environmental influences such as exhaust gases)
  • Strengthening of weakened areas (compensation of binder loss)
  • Elimination of active damage mechanisms and their triggers
  • If necessary, removal of loose chunks of substance and secure repositioning of the same
  • Removal of rust from exposed reinforcing steel and application of new corrosion protection
  • Injection of cracks
  • Completion of defects, chipping, spalling, etc.
  • Partial retouching (if required)
  • Application of protective slurries

Restoration

Sculptures restoration
Sculptures Restoration After

Our creative team consists of qualified restorers, artists and skilled craftsmen who specialise in the aesthetic enhancement of works of art and natural stone of all kinds, both indoors and outdoors. Our work ranges from private collections to museums. We specialise in the restoration of contemporary and antique objects. This involves repairing defects caused by age-related material fatigue and active and passive damage. The appearance of the object is then reconstructed true to the original. If necessary, we develop new conservation concepts for specific objects, including material modifications or innovative material developments in our own laboratory. In collaboration with other experts and scientists, we have initiated and carried out numerous research projects at an international level. Some of the results of this work have been published in official publications.
